Red, erotic, carnal, halfway between glamour and cannibalism: this is how the mouth with its impeccable white teeth filling the screen of the monitor shows itself. This work by video artist Lia Anna Hennig, who lives in England, is one of the forty-eight exhibits presented at the VIDEONALE between 15 March and 15 April 2007 in the Kunstmuseum Bonn. Besides the latest video creations by artists such as Jeanne Faust, Christoph Girardet or Mischa Kuball, the exhibition also presents works by young artists like the Japanese artist group Antenna or French artist Jean-Gabriel Périot. During the opening ceremony of the VIDEONALE 11 on 14 March 2007, an outstanding work of art will be awarded the VIDEONALE PRIZE worth 5.000 euros.

What on earth is Robert de Niro doing in Douglas Gordon's work THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS? Gordon takes the famous “Mirror Scene” from Martin Scorsese's Film TAXI DRIVER and uses this as the core of his own work of art. Theft, plagiarism, or just simply genial - the question of copyright is and remains an obscure business in the field of media art.

“Found Footage” is the magic formula with which video artists have so far successfully managed to work their way out of legal pitfalls. They take advantage of existing pictorial materials - films, newsreels or home videos - and use them for their own purposes. Principles of copyright, questions of personal rights, rights to the visual, and legal aspects of adaptation often remain unsolved.

During VIDEONALE 11, experts will use actual cases to explain the current legal situation. The media lawyer AMA WALTON, Munich, will handle the relevant legal problems relating to video art. Gallery owner ANITA BECKERS, Frankfurt, discusses legal aspects which crop up during her cooperation with artists and the sale of video art to collectors. DR. ANKE SCHIERHOLZ, in-house lawyer of VG Bildkunst Bonn, deals with the role of exploitation companies in the field of video art, while ANETTE GÖDDE describes this theme from the point of view of the artist.

History

VIDEONALE 11 is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Arts Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia, the City of Bonn, and the KfW Bankengruppe as principal sponsor. (January 25 2007)

In 1984 the Videonale Bonn was launched as an international festival and competition for art videos and since then has constantly expanded and altered. Apart from the competition the Videonale now presents itself with a large exhibition for installations and panel discussions on current topics in media art. So, for instance presenting Germany’s media academies and media centres and discussing their contribution to the further development of media art.

Since 1993 the event "Videonale Intermezzo" has been organized in close cooperation with the Videonale. A series of lectures on the history of media art entitled “Elektronenströme” has been run since 1995, which scrutinizes aspects of art history and media theory. Together with the Bonner Kunstverein and the Bonner Kinemathek (cinema in the Brotfabrik) the Videonale has organized events and brought its programmes to other museums in various cities, as for example to the Museum Ludwig in Cologne in 2003. The wide range of Videonale events vividly presents Bonn as a centre for media art.

Elektronenströme

The Videonale has already organized several lecture evenings entitled »Elektronenströme« which intensely investigate video art from an art-historical point of view. This series is now being revived in the run-up to the Videonale 10.
